Questions & Answers
Q. Question? I am going for italy trip. I have booked my flight return tickets + hotel accomodations in rome, florence and venice. Do i have to book my train tickets as well (from rome to florence and florence to venice) before applying for schengen visa?

A. Best Answer: No, you don't. You can deal with the train tickets after you get here if you choose. The regional trains don't even accept reservations for specific trains; most of the trains on the routes you're taking are higher speed trains that you can reserve, but you don't have to. Are you sure you need a Schengen visa? It appears like you asked the question from the Yahoo UK section.

Q. Question? Hey guys!

So my friends and I (7 in total) have decided to go on holiday next summer as a celebration of the end of A Levels forever! We've decided on somewhere in Europe, but we are still undecided as to country and area. I have some brochures, but I thought I'd get your opinions.

Here are preferences and such:
We're quite sophisticated and mature girls, so we'd like somewhere that's heavy with culture and not completely dominated by tourist attractions. We want the place to be scenic, hot and preferably to have a beach nearby. We don't care much for clubbing, and we'd prefer to stay away form it, although we'd like a hotel with evening entertainment such as dancing etc. We'd like to have lots of shops and cafes nearby so that we can eat out and not in the hotel. We like to explore and generally just wing it.

I was thinking Turkey. All I know is that one of us has her heart set on Rome and keeps nagging us about it, and as much as I'd like that her and two others will be going there anyway for a college trip in teh same year to see the sites. The rest of the group who don't study that subject might feel a little like the holiday wasn't intended for them, so I'd rather a place that all of us can enjoy equally.

You thoughts?
By the way we'll be 17 then :)
We'd rather not spend over £500 initially. Like we'd prefer to only have to spend money on food and maybe a few activities, but nothing big.
As in we'd like the hotel/flight etc package to come to under £500

A. Best Answer: Why not try the Greek island of Santorini, or go island hopping around the Greek islands and see a few of them.

You can fly to Athens. Athens is packed full of culture and sights like the Parthenon and Acropolis. As a city it's fairly busy so you could stay for only a couple of nights. From Athens you can take ferries to the islands. The ferry port is called Pireaus and ferries are failry cheap.

Islands I'd recommend visiting are Paros, Naxos, Ios and the jewel in the crown, Santorini. Santorini is the island to stay at. Plenty of shopping, cafes, restaurants, etc.

It's a fairly quiet island, not overly clubby but still has some lively parts. The island capital is called Fira where most of the designer shops and nightclubs are. For a quiester part of the island try Perissa or Oia.

Q. Question? I'm going to Rome with my girlfriend in April and want to know roughly how many Euros we need to take as everyone we speak to is saying "oooo, its really expensive" We have breakfast included with the hotel of which is smack bang in the middle of Rome, within walking distance of every attraction (bar the vatican) We only plan on going to the tourist attractions, nothing fancy..

A rought estimate would be great, as we don't want to take too little!

A. Best Answer: depends on:-
what you eat and drink
where you are going/what you see
taxi fees

I personally would take £400 plus your credit card so you have enough and can have a lovely time without worrying.
If its too much you can always keep the Euro's for your next holiday ! (or change them back)

Have a lovely time

Q. Question? I'm wanting to book a break in Rome to finally see all the wonderful history that has interested me for so long. I'll only be going for a few days so I wanted a hotel within walking distance of the main "attractions", The Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, Colosseum etc.

Where is the best region or area to look at booking hotels? Like I say somewhere close to most sights as I don't want to have to constantly be paying for taxi's and such.

Thank you!

A. Best Answer: If you want to save money you should look for a Bed&Breakfast.
I know the b&b 'La rossa e il nero' (http://www.larossaeilnero.it).
It is the Appio quarter more or less near San Giovanni church.
The b&b is really close to the underground station (3mins walking) and by underground you can easily go wherever you want (15 mins to Spanish steps and 20 mins to Vatican City).
It is run by a young, friendly italian couple and it's quite cheap, with very big (and clean) rooms.
In the neighborhood you will find everything you need (i.e. a supermarket is 1 minute walking) and the area it's absolutely safe.
have a nice stay ;-)

Q. Question? Hi,

I have been looking through hotels in Rome, and am hoping to stay either in the Vatican city area or Trevi fountain area. I have noticed that the prices are more expensive in June than July and was wondering if anyone knows why?

I would have assumed that June and July are high season and so should be the same price?

We would ideally like to visit in June, but may visit a few weeks later (July) to get our stay a bit cheaper. Is there any reason we shouldn't that im not aware of??

Thanks

A. Best Answer: Magik_Angel, hotels may be more expensive in June as it is peak travel season and Italy tends to receive a large number of tourists during this month. Also, hotels near the Vatican and Trevi fountain may be more expensive in general as they are top tourist locations. Trip Advisor, a trip planning website, may be helpful to you. Q. Question? Hi,

As some of you may know by now, I am trying to arrange this years holiday and really want to go to Rome. I am thinking that it may be a good idea (both financially and in terms of variation) to go to Rome for 1 week, but only spend 3 nights in a hotel in the city centre (within walking distance of the sights etc), and then the remaining 4 nights a few miles from the centre in a more rural location?

I have looked at the train routes and Im sure we could stay somwhere roughly 20 mins away and make quite a saving on the overall holiday cost. Has anyone done this, or would anyone advise against it?

Any experiences, advice etc welcome!
Thanks

A. Best Answer: Hi,
it could be a good idea, if you choose the Rome's coast you can have also metropolitan to reach Rome (for example from Ostia), but be care about the place you choose, because as all the big cities, some surrounding could be not very safe... so choose only turistic place, or the countryside around Rome.
Then another idea could be to book an apartment instead than 3 nights in a hotel, last year a found an apartment for 200? a week per person in the city center, that is not expensive at all.

If you tell me the villages you found I can help you more.

Bye!

Q. Question? I would like to go overnight by train from Rome to Geneva or Bern (Closer to interlaken). What's the best option? If I book thr' TRENITALIA, do I need to change at Milan? From Milan any train at night to swiss?
Is it cheaper or an evening easyjet flight from Rome to Geneva considering I need to pay for additional transport to and from the Airports and also a Hotel charge? Any direct overnight train from Rome to Swtzlnd? I believ I need to buy a swiss rail pass for moving around in Swtzlnd. will it be valid for this train from Rome to swzlnd? Would you please advise the best route and compare the fares etc?

A. Best Answer: Italian train schedules are here: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD

Unfortunately, there are no night trains to Geneva or any direct trains from Rome any more. The night train was a very nice option when it ran, but there are fewer and fewer night options. The closest option to a night train would be to take the high speed train leaving at 7:30 to Bologna and then change to a night train there which leaves at 10:31 pm. You'll need to get off that train at Lausanne at 3:59 am and change to a train to Geneva at 4:20 which will get you to Geneva at 5:12 am.

Other options would be to take the train from Rome to Milan and catch a train from there to Milan, but those are not night trains.

Q. Question? i want to stay at a hotel in the centre of rome, so i dont have to pay for taxi's everywhere. thanks =)

A. Best Answer: Most of the tourist attractions are walkable in Rome from many hotels. There are some things which are further out; however, Rome has a good public transportation system. You won't need taxis. For example, if you want to see the Roman Pyramid and the graves of the English poets Keats & Shelly, you can take the metro to the Piramide stop and you're right across the street from them. You could walk there from Circus Maximus (I've done it), but it's a fairly long hike.

I use the Venere.com site for hotels here in Italy. In rome, the most centrally located places for walking to the attractions are: Colosseo Foro Romano, Pantheon, Trevi, Navona, and Piazza di Spagna. The Repubblica area near Roma Termini train station is a little further out, but tends to be cheaper. http://www.venere.com/italy/rome/

Three places in rome that I've liked are:

http://www.venere.com/hotels/rome/hotel-accademia/ - right around the corner from Trevi Fountain
http://www.venere.com/hotels/rome/hotel-cesari/ - between Trevi and the Pantheon
http://www.venere.com/hotels/rome/hotel-romano/ - across the street from the Roman Forum

All of these are walking distance to the various attractions. I almost always walk Rome when I visit because there are so many interesting things to see between the tourist sites. There are also several hop-on, hop-off tour buses that circulate through the tourist area as well as regular buses and the metro. http://www.viator.com/tours/Rome/Rome-Hop-on-Hop-off-Double-Decker-Bus-Tour/d511-3523ROMOPEN , http://www.rexervation.com/romeopentour.asp

You can always select an area on the map on the venere site and sort hotels by price or past guest rating to see other options as well.

Q. Question? Its been my dream to spend a year in Italy, and i have been here for 4 months. But yesterday was terrible because my arsehole boss has decided he doesn't want to pay me for a month of work, half of Dec to present! i have to leave where i am staying as i live in the hotel he owns. i have a second job teaching English but if i stay in Rome i will only have enough money for rent and a bit of food. some have told me to go and others say im doing well considering i came here with nothing. what should i do!

A. Best Answer: well,to me if you have the money to survive you should stay here in Italy.i mean, you came here from England to stay for 12 months,so keep holding on!
you could do some ripetizioni and earn some money with it!
never give up!
